KhorFakkan: a Strategic Fort in History
The modern city of Khor Fakkan belongs to the Emirate of Sharjah, situated about 100km, to the east of the city of Sharjah. It occupies a direct strategic location on the eastern coast overlooking the Gulf of Oman. The most prominent feature of the city is the port of Khor Fakkan which is the hub of an international trade and an active economic centre.
Various archaeological campaigns have taken place in the city over the last decade. These resulted in revealing significant discoveries which emphasise the importance of the city throughout the ancient history of the area.
A large settlement dating to the second millennium B.0 was unearthed in 1995. The settlement occupies the slopes of three adjacent mountains in close proximity to the sea. The inhabitants have prepared stepped platforms on the slopes of the Jebels in order to facilitate building their houses. The houses had been constructed with locally available stones and largely consisted of rectangular shaped rooms. It is likely that these were roofed with timber or tree branches placed over wooden posts or tree trunks as indicated by the presence of post holes found in various places around the houses. A variety of materials such as pottery, soft stone vessels, grinding stones and fishing tools were found throughout the buildings.
It seems that the Khor Fakkan settlement continued to play an important role in the human activities for a long time during the subsequent Iron Age, Hellenistic and the Islamic Eras. Important Islamic discoveries were recently made at various parts of Khor Fakkan. Most important are those found at the top of a mountain and those near the gate of the modem port. Building layers comprising houses, work ships and other buildings containing different materials, notably Islamic pottery and pottery imported from China, Thailand, Burna, Iran dating to the period from 14th-16th Century. Yellow glazed pottery was also found, which had been imported from Yeman dates to the 13th Century. Other finds include glass vessels, bracelets, metal items and adornments.
The archaeological discoveries at Khor Fakkan imply the importance of the city as a trade centre which must have played an important in trade role in an international trade network during the Middle Islamic Period.
